The 29th Asia International Art Exhibition

Session: August 7, 2021 (Sat) - August 29, 2021 (Sun)
Venue: Kyushu Geibun-Kan(Chikugo Regional Park Art and Culture Exchange Facility)

The 29th Asian International Art Exhibition will be hosted at Kyushu Geibunkan. Fukuoka Prefecture, the Federation of Asian Artists Japan Committee, and Chikugo JR Geijutsu no Sato Corporation have established the 29th Asian International Art Exhibition executive committee at Kyushu Geibunkan, which is responsible for hosting the event.

TThe Asian International Art Exhibition Japan Committee started holding the “Japan-Korea Exhibition” in 1972. In 1985, other Asian countries and regions joined the event, making the exhibition that year the first Asian International Art Exhibition. The Exhibition has been hosted in a number of countries and regions in Asia a total of 28 times so far.

TMember countries and regions take turns hosting this Exhibition, and this time, it is Japan’s turn to host it. It has been 16 years since the exhibition was held in Japan.

TFrom ancient times, Fukuoka Prefecture has been open to the Asian continent, and has a long history of exchange through culture, art, and industry.

TIn 2004, Fukuoka hosted the 19th People’s Cultural Festival, and the 19th Asian International Art Exhibition was held as a part of that festival. The Crown Prince (the current Emperor of Japan) visited the exhibition, and total attendance exceeded 13,000 visitors.

TThe Federation of Asian Artists has held exhibitions in the United Kingdom and other places around the world, and through this activity has endeavored to promote and develop Asian art, and promote friendship and goodwill between countries and regions through mutual understanding of culture and art.

TKyushu Geibunkan is located in Chikugo, a region that has produced a number of masters of modern and contemporary Japanese art. The Fukuoka prefectural government commissioned Kengo Kuma, the designer of the Japan National Stadium, to design the facility to be a place for art and culture exchange.

TExchange with Asia is one of the chief activities of Kyushu Geibunkan. The Fukuoka prefectural government commissioned the management of these activities to its designated administrator, Chikugo JR Geijutsu no Sato Corporation. Chikugo JR Geijutsu no Sato Corporation firmly believes that holding the Asian International Art Exhibition, with its long-established tradition, at the same time as the Olympics and Paralympics is in alignment with the facility’s mission, and that doing so can contribute to the promotion and development of Asian art and the promotion of friendship and goodwill through mutual understanding of Asian culture.

TOn the one hand, we must figure out how to conduct international art and culture exchange in a way that is compatible with this “With Corona Era.” At the same time, with the cooperation of educators in the Chikugo region, we wish to contribute to the revitalization of the region, to art education for primary and secondary school students and to the development of young artists.

TIt has been more than 8 years since we first opened our doors, and we are pleased to finally be able to bring you this Asian International Art Exhibition.
We sincerely hope you enjoy it.
